Bernhard Meyer (born October 5, 1696 in Elberfeld (now part of Wuppertal ), † 1757 in Elberfeld) was a German politician and mayor of Elberfeld.

biography

Meyer was born as the son of a pastor originally from Huchting near Bremen , who had worked for the Reformed Church in Elberfeld since 1706. Before Bernhard Meyer senior (1657–1730) came to Elberfeld, he had previously been to Urdenbach, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg. His mother was Eva Katharina Schlösser (1654–1734) from Elberfeld, the daughter of the mayor Anton Schlösser (1609–1665), who held this office in 1645. Bernhard Meyer junior had married his cousin Anna Maria von Carnap (1697–1767) on April 10, 1720. She was a daughter of Peter von Carnap (1659–1736), who was mayor in 1713 and came from the von Carnap family, who had largely determined the fate of the city of Elberfeld in the first half of the 18th century. The marriage had ten children, only five of whom did not die early.

Meyer worked as a merchant in Elberfeld and was a council member in Elberfeld in 1725. He was first proposed as mayor in 1735, but could not prevail. It was not until a year later, when he was on the nomination list again, that he was elected to office. In 1737 he was then city judge. Meyer died in late 1757 and was buried on December 3 of that year.
