Bernhard visits Bishop Hugo von Grenoble and the Carthusian monks is a leaded glass window that was created between 1505 and 1532 for the cloister of the Altenberg monastery . It has been in the Ludwig Collection (Aachen) since 1956 and is on display in the Schnütgen Museum.

origin

The pane was one of the panes of the cloister of Altenberg Abbey that was removed in 1806 . It came into the collection of the wine merchant Johann Heinrich Pelpissen (1731–1810) in Cologne and was given to his daughter Maria Franziska Hirn nee. Pelpissen (1765-1833) inherited. In 1956 it came to the Ludwig Collection in Aachen.

The disc comes from a cycle about the life of St. Bernard , it is approx. 85 cm wide and 61 cm high. The disc has various additions and a presumed line of inscription is missing. The story is told of how Bernhard visits Bishop Hugo of Grenoble at the Carthusian monastery . On the left we see Hugo kneeling in front of Bernhard. Both Hugo and Bernhard are distinguished by a nimbus . The banners reflect the mutual greeting. On the far right, the founder kneels dressed in contemporary fashion.
