The Bernhardsthaler pond or landscape pond Bernhardsthal (more rarely also: Bernhardsthaler See ) is located east of the center of Bernhardsthal in northeast Lower Austria . With an area of approx. 25 hectares, it is the largest water area in the Weinviertel .
In 1458 ... teichten ... were first mentioned in a sales contract near Bernhardsthal and in 1570 three ponds were named in a division agreement: Under the Reinthaler pond (upper pond at the western end of the village), the boiler pond and the lower one - i.e. today's large pond Behind the church not .
During the Josefin land survey in 1787, the upper and lower ponds were drained and used as meadow and arable land from then on.
Between 1838 and 1839, large amounts of soil were removed from the drained pond floor for the railway embankment during the construction of the Northern Railway .
According to a municipal council resolution from 1984, the public purchase of the pond areas was carried out by the municipality and after extensive construction work in several sections, the small (inner) pond was flooded on November 7, 1991 and the large (outer) pond on September 17, 1992.
Due to necessary renovation measures, the pond was left out and fished at the beginning of October 2007 (as so often in its history). The new flooding took place on November 30, 2008.
Today the pond is mainly used for recreational purposes.
But not only the pond, but also the brick bridge of the northern railway represents a cultural and historical specialty. The bridge with two smaller and one larger arch was planned by Carl Ritter von Ghega . Contrary to plans that would have resulted in destruction, it was kept in operation.
