Bernheimer Fine Old Masters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernheimer Fine Old Masters was an art dealer mainly for old masters from the 16th to 19th centuries. The gallery was internationally recognized as one of the leading art dealers for old masters. The managing director and owner was Konrad O. Bernheimer , who is sometimes referred to as "one of the most successful art dealers in the world".

The first forerunner of the Bernheimer Fine Old Master company was founded in Munich in 1864 by Bernheimer's great-grandfather Lehmann Bernheimer . He started out as a cloth merchant and expanded the range to include home textiles, carpets and furniture until his family ran Munich's leading furniture store with an impact throughout southern Germany and beyond. Konrad O. Bernheimer took over the family business in 1977 and initially concentrated on antiques and expanded the range to include art. As a result, the art trade came to the fore until in 1987 Bernheimer sold the historic Bernheimer house , which had become too big for him as a furniture store. He established his art trade under the name Bernheimer Fine Old Masters, first at Promenadeplatz , then at Brienner Strasse 7.

In 2002, Bernheimer took over the long-established London art dealer Colnaghi , which celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2010. When the next generation entered the business with two of his daughters, the focus of trade shifted again. In 2005, Blanca Bernheimer added classic and contemporary photography . From this, the now independent Bernheimer Fine Art Gallery in Lucerne developed in 2013 under the direction of Blanka Bernheimer. Isabel Bernheimer brought in the gallery business with works by living artists. In 2015 she founded Bernheimer Contemporary in Berlin . Konrad O. Bernheimer gave up the Munich location at the beginning of 2016 and concentrated on trading in old masters at Colnaghi in London. He also cited the Cultural Property Protection Act as reasons for withdrawing from Germany .
