Coordinates: 35 ° 38 ′  S , 145 ° 48 ′  E The Berrigan Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 2,065.8 km² and has about 8,500 inhabitants.

Berrigan is located on the southern border of the state with Victoria on the Murray River about 470 km west of the Australian capital Canberra and 310 km north of Melbourne . The area includes 19 hamlets and villages: Barooga, Boomanoomana, Geraki, Green Swamp Road, Lalalty, Langunya, Leniston, Monaro Vale, Mount Gwynne, The Drop, The Retreat, Tocumwal, Tocumwal Raaf Station and parts of Berrigan, Finley, Jerilderie, Mulwala, Pine Lodge and Savernake. The headquarters of the Shire Council is in the village of Berrigan in the northeast of the LGA, where about 900 people live.

The Berrigan Shire Council has eight members who are elected by LGA residents. Barrigan is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
