Model from Berslingen

Berslingen is a former village in the canton of Schaffhausen in Switzerland . It was abandoned around 1200 and has been forgotten. Today there are no more traces of Berslingen. A model has been on view since 2010 in the newly designed exhibition on the history of the city of Schaffhausen in the Museum zu Allerheiligen .

location

Berslingen was at the transition from Merishausertal to Mühlental in the area of the city of Schaffhausen . Today Hauptstrasse 4 leads over part of the former settlement area. In its place there is now an industrial zone, the works area of the municipal civil engineering office and the lodging house, a former workers' accommodation that has served as a school building for the International School of Schaffhausen since 2009 .

history

Alemannic settlers built around 600 AD. a pioneer farm in the Merishausertal. From this the medieval village of Berslingen developed in the following centuries. Around 800 AD a simple stone church with a cemetery was built. In the year 852 the name Berslingen was first mentioned in a document. The village flourished at the turn of the millennium. A century later, the residents left their farms. The remaining residents began to smelt iron. At the end of the 12th century the settlement fell into disrepair. However, the corridor was still used for agriculture.

Archaeological excavations

On the occasion of the construction of what was then the A4 national road, the exact location of Berslingen was localized. The find triggered a large-scale archaeological emergency excavation between 1968 and 1970. With a total area of 10,000 m² of settlement excavations, this was one of the largest archaeological excavations in Switzerland. The excavation site was open to visitors during the excavation work. In the course of the renovation work on the lodging house, further excavations were carried out in 2008. Two pit houses were found. Pit houses are only deepened 10 to 50 cm.
