Bert Hubbard , also Albert Hubbard (born June 29, 1927 in Detroit , Michigan, USA) is an American choreographer , aquatic artist and former synchronized swimmer . He was one of the first male synchronized swimmers in the United States.

Athletic career 1946–54

Hubbard began synchronized swimming in 1946 shortly after it was introduced by Chicago swimmers in his hometown of Detroit . In 1949 he and Lee Embrey won the gold medal in the men's duo competition at the US National AAU Synchronized Swimming Championships with the St. Louis Blues March freestyle . As a soloist, he became US Junior Champion in 1954 with the program A Viking's Prayer Before Battle . Due to the competition rules of the AAU , he was not allowed to swim in mixed duets or teams with women, and finally men were banned from all national and international competitions, which forced Hubbard to retire from his sporting career in 1954.

1955-present: Aquatic artist, choreographer and historian

The founding of the International Academy of Aquatic Art (IAAA) in 1955 gave Bert Hubbard the opportunity to perform as an aquatic artist at IAAA festivals across North America . He has choreographed numerous programs that have been presented by both himself and other swimmers. For example, in 1960 he created two mixed trios: Othello to music from G. Verdi's opera and A Medieval Morality as well as the solo A World of Silence performed by himself . He was active as a swimmer until 2009. Since then he has concentrated on his work as a historian and keeps many books, videos, photos and newspaper articles in the IAAA archive. He also writes articles for The Aquatic Artist magazine .
