The International Academy of Aquatic Art (German: Internationale Akademie für Wasserkunst , abbr. IAAA ) is a non-profit organization for the development of swimming into the performing arts . It is based in the USA .

history

The IAAA was founded in 1955 by former synchronized swimmers from the USA to develop swimming from a purely competitive discipline to an artistic, creative form of dance. The founding members were:

  • Mary Derosier: former chair of the Amateur Athletic Union , which was one of the first organizations to hold synchronized swimming competitions
  • Richard J. Dodson: 1951 editor of Synchronized Swimmer , the first synchronized swimming magazine
  • Henry Gundling: trainer, manager and husband of synchronized swimmer Beulah Gundling

Since its inception, the IAAA has regularly organized festivals across North America , at which various swimming performances with choreographies for soloists, duets and groups are presented. The swimmers and choreographers who work at the IAAA refer to themselves as aquatic artists (German: water artists ). The style of the performances, which are shown by both women and men, consists of elements of synchronized swimming as well as various dance forms . In most cases, the actors choose art music as background music for their programs.

Beulah Gundling and Bert Hubbard were among the most important aquatic artists . In addition to her diverse work as a swimmer, choreographer and book author, Gundling also gave international lectures as a representative of the IAAA. Hubbard, one of the first male synchronized swimmers from the USA, is still active as a historian for the IAAA and keeps a wealth of books, videos, photos and newspaper articles in its archive.
