Bert Salzman

Bert Salzman (born September 2, 1931 in Brooklyn , New York , † November 29, 2016 in Sonoma , California ) was an American director and painter.

Life

Salzman grew up in an orphanage and dropped out of high school. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and took part in the Korean War as a soldier . After his return he worked as a draftsman and came into the film business rather by chance. He taught himself his skills as an electrician, lighting technician and cameraman with the help of self-help books. From 1961 to 1964 he worked with documentary filmmaker George Stoney . Salzman made his directorial debut in 1964 with the film How Things Get Done , commissioned by the Adult Education Association for the Metropolis: Creator or Destroyer? originated. On behalf of the Learning Corporation of America (LCA), which produced educational films for the classroom, Salzman made several films dealing with different ethnic groups, including Geronimo Jones (1970) about a Papago Apache, Felipa: North of the Border ( 1971) about a Chicano girl and until 1975 Angel and Big Joe about a Puerto Rican immigrant family. For Angel and Big Joe , he won an Oscar in 1976 for Best Short Film .

In the early 1980s, Salzman withdrew from the film business and settled in France and later in Northern California to devote himself to painting. In 2004 he published his book Being a Buddha on Broadway .
