Berthe Bernage

Berthe Bernage (born August 11, 1886 in Paris , † May 2, 1972 in Paris ) was a French writer . At times she wrote under the pseudonym " Bettine ".

Life

She was born as the daughter of Siméon-Auguste Barthélémy and Louise-Marie Jenny Deltour in Paris, the youngest of six daughters. Her sister Marie died at the age of 18, her sister Marguerite married Arsène Limon Duparcmeur. Her sister Geneviève, who lost her fiancé in the Battle of the Marne, was Bernage's confidante and secretary. They also lived together until the end of their lives. Berthe Bernage studied at the Sorbonne and obtained a licentiate in philology ("licenciée dès lettres").

Even in childhood, she carefully observed her middle-class environment. Little by little, her childish representations became stories that she sent to some magazines, which she accepted well-meaning. She began a serious career as a writer in 1923. In October 1932, she and Marguerite Bourcet took part in a meeting of Catholic writers, at which the "Journées des Femmes écrivains catholiques" (German: Days of Catholic Writers) were founded. This event was held three times a year in the following years. In 1934 Bernage became a member of the "Société des Gens de Lettres" . From 1963 she received an annual pension of 160 francs.

Berthe Bernage became known for her series "Brigitte" , which she started in 1925 and which describes Brigitte Hauteville's life from her youth to old age. She wrote over 50 books, including novels about other women. a. about Elisabeth and about Marguerite. Bernage received the " Grand Prix du Roman de l ' Académie française " three times .
