Berthold Rosenthal

Berthold Rosenthal ( January 17, 1875 in Liedolsheim - December 16, 1957 in Omaha , USA ) was a German teacher and author.

Life

Berthold Rosenthal was born as the son of the Jewish cattle dealer Emanuel Rosenthal and Babette. Because born. After studying to be a teacher in Mannheim , he initially worked as a religion teacher in several places. In 1901 he got a job at the grammar school in Mannheim. In 1914 he married Johanna Benzian (1884–1961), with whom he had a son and two daughters. After returning from the First World War , he became a teacher in Mannheim again. In the 1920s he published an extensive standard work on the history of the Jews in Baden.

After the so-called seizure of power by the National Socialists , he lost his job in 1933. He now devoted himself more to his research on Jewish history and published numerous articles, including in the magazine Deutsche Volksschulwarte . In the autumn of 1940 he was able to emigrate with his wife Johanna via Portugal to the USA , where family members were already living. He lived in New York for the next few years .

Berthold Rosenthal died in 1957, his estate is in the Leo Baeck Institute in New York.
