Berthold Vogel (* 1963 in Würzburg ), sociologist , is managing director of the Sociological Research Institute Göttingen (SOFI) .

life and work

Berthold Vogel passed his Abitur in 1983 at the old-language Johannes-Butzbach-Gymnasium in Miltenberg (Bavaria). From 1983 to 1989 he studied sociology, political science, economics, pedagogy and labor law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Also at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen he received his doctorate in 1998 with a dissertation on the economic and social change in an East German community after 1989 ("Without work in capitalism. The loss of gainful employment in the upheaval of East German society", Hamburg 1998). In 2009 he completed his habilitation in sociology at the University of Kassel .

The habilitation thesis, entitled "Conflicts of prosperity. Social questions that come from the center" (Hamburg 2009), aims at a theoretical interpretation and empirical diagnosis of contemporary society. The focus is on questions of social inequality and the development of the welfare state and the working society. Further publications: "Die Staatsbedürftigkeit der Gesellschaft" (Hamburg 2007), "Half a Life" (Konstanz 2010, with Franz Schultheis and Michael Gemperle) and "Demography and Democracy. On the Politicization of the Welfare State" (Hamburg 2012, with Jens Kersten and Claudia New ).

From 1989 to 2002 Berthold Vogel was a research associate at the Sociological Research Institute Göttingen (SOFI) e. V. at the Georg August University. From 2003 to 2005 he was a fellow of the work area "The Society of the Federal Republic" at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research . From 2006 to 2015, Vogel was project manager at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research with a focus on “Welfare State. Social inequality and public goods ”. From 2009 to 2011 he represented the professorship "Macrosociology of Modern Societies" at the University of Kassel. Berthold Vogel has been teaching as a visiting professor at the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) since 2008 . In 2014 he was appointed adjunct professor for sociology at the University of Kassel. Berthold Vogel has been Managing Director of the Sociological Research Institute Göttingen (SOFI) e. V. at the Georg August University.

The focus of work is the sociology of labor, state and justice as well as the sociology of public goods. Berthold Vogel is a member of the "Future of Work" commission of the German Trade Union Federation and the Hans Böckler Foundation , chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Hans Böckler Foundation, advisor to the German Bishops' Conference on sociological and social issues and scientific director of the Braunschweig Colloquia Legal culture (in cooperation with the Lower Saxony Catholic Forum). He is a specialist reviewer for research funding institutions and for social science journals.
