Berthold von Neuchâtel (* in the 12th century ; † July 13, 1220 ) was Bishop of Lausanne from 1212 to 1220 .

Berthold was first mentioned in 1182. He came from the Swiss noble family of the Counts of Neuchâtel . His parents were Ulrich II, Lord of Neuchâtel, and Berthe de Granges.

The minstrel Rudolf von Neuenburg (also Rudolf von Fenis) was a brother of Berthold.

Life

He was treasurer of the Bishop of Lausanne in 1196, provost of the cathedral in Basel in 1208/09 and provost in Neuchâtel in 1209 before he was elected Bishop of Lausanne in 1212. After the Zähringer died out , he abolished the bailiwick of the diocese, had his possessions fortified and expanded the network of his ministerials . He operated a policy of reconciliation between Pope Innocent III. and Emperor Friedrich II. In 1215 he took part in the 4th Lateran Council . Bertold died guarding a money transport when he was about to embark on a crusade .
