Bertold Witte

Bertold Witte (born January 17, 1937 in Essen ) is a German geodesist and emeritus university professor.

Live and act

Bertold Witte studied geodesy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn and was then a scientific assistant to Helmut Wolf and Walter Hofmann . During several years of research in the USA on earth measurements , the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität made him a doctorate in engineering. The topic of the dissertation was the calculation of horizontal derivations of gravity disturbances in the outer space of the earth from a development of the potential according to spherical functions . In 1971 Bertold Witte completed his habilitation on the subject of calculation methods for determining the earth's gravity potential from Doppler observations with the help of the model of a simple layer .

The Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen appointed him an adjunct professor in 1974 and a professor for geodesy and director of the geodesy institute in 1977. One focus of his research work was the development of calibration and calibration procedures for geodetic instruments. From 1989 to 2002 Bertold Witte was Professor of Geodesy and Director of the Geodetic Institute at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, succeeding Hermann Seeger . Since 1978 he has been a member of the German Geodetic Commission .

Bertold Witte is the author of the standard work Surveying and Basics of Statistics for the Building Industry, the 8th edition of which was published in 2015. He is co-editor of the specialist magazine land management and land regulation .

From 2008 to 2016 Bertold Witte was chairman of the board of trustees of the Museum of Surveying Technology .
