Bertrand Gambier

Bertrand Gambier (born August 31, 1879 in Villers-Bocage , Somme department , † January 10, 1954 ) was a French mathematician .

Bertrand Gambier studied at the École normal supérieure (ENS) in Paris. After receiving his doctorate in 1909, he was first maître de conférences at the University of Rennes , and from 1913 he was professor there. In 1922 he switched to a professorship at the University of Lille .

First Gambier dealt with the theory of differential equations in the complex, where he continued the investigations of Paul Painlevé and completed ( Painlevé equations ). Later he mainly worked on differential geometry . In 1943 he was president of the Société Mathématique de France .
