Bertrand Patenaude

Bertrand M. Patenaude (born February 21, 1956 ) is an American historian and, as such, Research Fellow for modern history and international politics at Stanford University and the Hoover Institution .

biography

Patenaude began his studies at Boston College and received his PhD from Stanford University. He spent a year (1977–1978) as a doctoral student at the University of Vienna . Patenaude is the author and editor of several books on European, Russian and American history. He taught for eight years (1992-2000) in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey , California , where his outstanding performance as a class teacher was recognized with the Schieffelin Award for Teaching Excellence two years in a row.

The Big Show in Bololand won the 2003 Marshall Shulman Book Prize. Several of his works served as the basis for television or radio documentaries.

His book reviews appear regularly in the Wall Street Journal .

One of his most important discoveries in the Hoover Archives is a Russian book manuscript from 1922. He assigned the previously unidentified manuscript to the Moscow economist Lev Litoshenko . It turned out to be a first class study of Bolshevik agricultural policy in the early years of Soviet power, with a special focus on war communism . In collaboration with Russian colleagues, it was published as Sotsializatsiia zemli v Rossii (“Socialization of the soil in Russia”, Sibirskii khronograf, Novosibirsk 2001).
