The Vocational Training Center Bremen (BBW) in Bremen - Horn-Lehe , Lehe district , Universitätsallee 20, is one of the most important buildings in Bremen . It is maintained by the Sozialverband Deutschland together with the Stendal vocational training center.

History and structure

The vocational training center was built for the Reichsbund from 1976 to 1978 according to plans by me di um (Jentz, Popp, Wiesner, Störmer , Zimmermann) from Hamburg. It serves as a training center for the initial vocational training of young people with disabilities. Most of these trainees are housed in a boarding school on the premises. The cafeteria area under the pyramid roofs with square sheds is reminiscent of buildings of structuralism . The halls with their distinctive steel structures are remarkable. A similar architecture can be found in sports buildings at the University of Bremen , which were also planned by the me di um group .

The facility opens up to the environment, including nature and landscape. The facility, which was initially isolated, has now become part of a residential area on the edge of the Bremen Technology Park and the university campus.

The architecture guide bremen writes: “Spatially, the design captivates with its balance of openness and security: public paths cross the site, well-proportioned courtyards invite diverse uses. The architects have succeeded in giving the different areas an individual character without giving up a coherent overall picture. "

Responsibilities of the BBW

The Bremen Vocational Training Center of the Social Association of Germany (SoVD, formerly Reichsbund) offers young people with disabilities career preparation measures and training under one roof for many apprenticeships with their own vocational school. The training is accompanied by psychological, medical and socio-educational specialist services as well as educational support in the homes. Internships take place in companies. As a rule, the costs are borne by the Federal Employment Agency . The state of Bremen finances the vocational school. The BBW is networked with a number of cooperation partners. A differentiated range of apartments on site and in neighboring districts for 300 people is available. From 1978 to around 2014, 2,840 trainees were given a recognized professional qualification.

The BBW was managed by the now former managing director Gerd Meyer-Rockstedt until December 2014. Torben Möller took over this position in January 2015 and is currently head of the Bremen vocational training center.
