The professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany eV (BVA) is an association and advocacy of about 90% of the German ophthalmologists and one of the first democratically organized professional medical associations in Germany. Its main tasks consist in the perception, promotion and representation of professional political, labor law, technical, scientific and informational interests of its members. In addition to continuing education and training, as well as the provision of scientific and political information, quality assurance and control of the specialist area is one of the association's other priorities. The BVA is a member of the National Association of Specialists in Germany (SpiFa).

There is close cooperation with the scientific association of German ophthalmologists, the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG). Both associations set up a number of commissions on different topics, including advanced training in ophthalmology, law, international ophthalmology and ophthalmological guidelines.

The professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany is divided into 17 regional associations. He maintains a number of specialized departments for processing professional political, technical and civil legal issues:

The members are represented in an assembly of delegates by 70 full members. These elect the board. The 1st chairman is currently (as of January 2020) Peter Heinz (resident ophthalmologist from Schlüsselfeld ), who replaced the Aachen ophthalmologist and university professor Bernd Bertram in this position. The headquarters of the federal office is in Düsseldorf .
