Basic position of the accelerated dragon variant after 4.… g7 – g6

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

The accelerated dragon variant is a variant of the Sicilian Defense , an opening in the game of chess . It is classified in the ECO codes under the codes B34 to B39.

The accelerated kite variant arises after the moves ( see also : chess notation ):

1. e2-e4 c7-c5
2. Ng1-f3 Nb8-c6
3. d2-d4 c5xd4
4. Nf3xd4 g7-g6

Basic idea

The accelerated dragon variant differs from the classic dragon variant in that Black has not yet played d7 – d6. This can be an advantage, as Black saves a tempo with a direct d7 – d5 compared to d7 – d6 – d5 . After z. B. 5. Nb1 – c3 Bf8 – g7 6. Bc1 – e3 Ng8 – f6 7. Bf1 – e2 0–0 8. 0–0 goes d7 – d5 in one go. By timely 8. Nd4 – b3 Black can only move d7 – d6 and the game ends up in the classic dragon variant.

Even after 7. f2 – f3 0–0 8. Qd1 – d2, d7 – d5 goes in one go. When attempting by 7. L f1-c4 to reach the Yugoslav Attack of the Dragon variation, after may 8 7 ... 0-0 Lc4-b3 through 8. ... a7-a5 the Uogele resulting variant. Now White should additionally protect the e4 pawn with 9. f2 – f3 , because Black threatens to swap an edge pawn for the center pawn with 9.… a5 – a4 10. Bb3xa4 Nf6xe4 11. Nc3xe4 Ra8xa4 and thus gain a good game.

In order to avoid the Rossolimo variant , Black can also play g7 – g6 on move 2. This is called the hyper-accelerated kite variant . In many cases, the accelerated dragon version can be played again by changing the train . But White can also try to exploit the temporary weakening of the diagonal by means of 3. d2 – d4 c5xd4 4. Qd1xd4 . For example, after 4.… Ng8 – f6 5. e4 – e5 Nb8 – c6 6. Qd4 – a4 Nf6 – d5 there are independent lines.

Maróczy structure

On the other hand, White is given the opportunity to continue with 5. c2 – c4 (the Maróczy structure, named after Géza Maróczy ), since Nb1 – c3 has not yet been played. The opponent often answers the Maróczy structure with a structure in the form of a hedgehog position .

In the Maróczy setup, in addition to his development, White initially focuses on preventing the breakthroughs on b5 and d5. Unless early f7 – f5 happens, the white rooks belong on c1 and d1. Before that, White draws Be3, Be2, 0–0 and Qd2.

One main line is 5. c2 – c4 Bf8 – g7 6. Bc1 – e3 Ng8 – f6 7. Nb1 – c3 Nf6 – g4 8. Qd1xg4 Nc6xd4 9. Qg4 – d1 Nd4 – e6 (e7 – e5 10. Nc3 – b5) One An example role is Larsen-Petrosjan, Los Angeles 1966 . Meanwhile, 10. Ta1 – c1 is considered more accurate. Then Qd8 – a5 has to prevent 11. b2 – b4.

In order to get a position with a knight against a bad white, white-squared bishop, Black is to exchange the black-squared bishops as in the structure 5. c2 – c4 Bf8 – g7 6. Bc1 – e3 Ng8 – f6 7. Nb1 – c3 0-0 8. Bf1 – e2 d7 – d6 9. 0–0 Bc8 – d7 10. Ra1 – c1 Sc6xd4 11. Be3xd4 Bd7 – c6 12. f2 – f3 a7 – a5 13. b2 – b3 Nf6 – d7 ready.

After 14. Nc3 – d5 Bg7xd4 15. Qd1xd4, e7 – e5 sets up a blockade on the black squares. After 16. Qd4 – d2 Bc6xd5 17. Qd2xd5 Nd7 – c5 18. Rf1 – d1 Ra8 – a6 the position is in equilibrium.

In Bisguier - Fischer, New York 1956 , the accelerated dragon variant emerged from the four pawn attack of the King's Indian Defense .

The secondary variation 5. c2 – c4 Bf8 – g7 6. Nd4 – c2 wants to refuse to swap pieces to make it easier for Black who stands more tightly. After another d7 – d6 7. Bf1 – e2 Ng8 – f6 8. Nb1 – c3 0–0 9. 0–0 Nf6 – d7 10. Bc1 – d2 Nd7 – c5 11. b2 – b4 for pawn sacrifice 11.… Bg7xc3 12. Bd2xc3 Nc5xe4 13. Bc3 – b2 ready.

Gurgenidse variant

The Gurgenidse variant arises after 5. c2 – c4 Ng8 – f6 6. Nb1 – c3 Sc6xd4 7. Qd1xd4 d7 – d6. It can be nuanced by inserting 6.… d7 – d6 7. Bf1 – e2 Sc6xd4 8. Qd1xd4 Bf8 – g7 .
