development
In 1974 the BGAG was founded from the BfG Bank and several existing companies in union ownership such as B. the new home Hamburg incorporated into the BGAG. BGAG Holding had the task of increasing the assets of the trade unions involved.
After the failed sale of the Neue Heimat for 1 DM in 1986 to Horst Schiesser , the Neue Heimat was wound up. A large part of the housing stock was sold to the housing associations of the federal states, in some cases with considerable losses.
To further reduce debt, all investments in the financial services sector were gradually sold, most recently at the end of 2005 the BHW shares to Postbank and AHBR (Allgemeine Hypothekenbank Rheinboden ) to the US financial investor Lone Star .
Volksfürsorge was also sold, which is now part of the AMB Generali Group, a subsidiary of the Italian Generali.
On September 22, 2006 it became known that a larger real estate package (46 properties) of GGI was to be sold to British or US investors, including ten union houses in the east (one example: the Volkshaus Leipzig ) and one in the old federal area. On December 18, 2006, the sales contract was signed with the fund management company Cerberus . In 2009, however, the Volkshaus Leipzig was repurchased by the ver.di union .
