history
ING-DiBa was founded in 1965 as Bank für Sparanlagen und Vermögensbildung AG (BSV) in Frankfurt am Main, with the then chairman of IG Bau-Steine-Erden , Georg Leber , playing a key role . The purpose of the institute was to provide all employees in Germany with a bank where they could save up the newly introduced capital-building benefits amounting to seven DM per month. Leber commented on the behavior of the established German banks at the time with the following sentence: “The German banks seem like an old dog that is fed up. You can hold out a fat bone to him, it doesn't even growl. "
In 1981 the capital was around DM 75 million and the German Trade Union Federation (DGB) owned the Bank für Gemeinwirtschaft (BfG) through the trade union asset holding BGAG , and the majority shareholder of the BSV with 51 percent through the BfG. From 1986 to 1997, Hans Matthöfer was also chairman of the bank's supervisory board in his role as chairman of the BGAG.
In 1994 the company changed its name to Deutsche Direktbank AG. After a threat of legal action from Deutsche Bank, the name was then changed to Allgemeine Deutsche Direktbank AG . In 1998 the Dutch banking group ING Groep acquired 49% of the DiBa shares. From 1999 the bank appeared under DiBa (for: direct bank).
It established itself as the bank that offered its services via the Internet , fax or telephone . In 1999 she took over the GiroTel bank . In 2002, DiBa acquired all of the shares in Degussa Bank in Frankfurt and sold them on November 27, 2006 with a loss of EUR 14 million in accordance with IFRS to a group of investors led by MMWarburg & CO .
At the beginning of 2002 the ING Groep bought a further 21%, in 2003 it took over DiBa completely. For real estate financing, DiBa strengthened its telephone sales through cooperation with credit brokers and thus rose to become one of the largest German real estate financiers.
In July 2003, DiBa took over Germany's second largest direct bank, Entrium Direct Bankers AG from Nuremberg , which in turn was founded in 1990 as Quelle Bank, and thus grew to around three million customers. In addition to the headquarters in Frankfurt am Main and the Hanover location, it now had another branch in Nuremberg. In 2004, the bank changed its market presence to ING-DiBa , and on July 1, 2005 it was renamed ING-DiBa AG. ING-DiBa AG is also a member of the Association of German Banks .
On January 1, 2007, the gradual changeover from DiBa to ING-DiBa was completed.
Since September 8, 2014, ING-DiBa has been offering its customers identification via webcam as an alternative to the Postident process.
On February 19, 2018 ING-DiBa acquired the fintech company Lendico in order to be able to offer more financing solutions for small and medium-sized companies.
The ING-DiBa logo will change from the end of November 2018. The addition DiBa is no longer applicable and is only recognizable as a hint in the slogan. With the new brand identity, the financial institution only presents itself as ING - Die Bank und Du . The change in the brand identity is intended to reflect the internal focus on agile methods . The company (ING-DiBa AG) remains unaffected.
