Betli Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and lies west of Lesser Mackellar Island .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. In turn, the Swiss expedition member Xavier Mertz named it for reasons that are not known.
