Lesser Mackellar Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands and is located 3 km north of Cape Denison and immediately northeast of Greater Mackellar Island in the center of the Commonwealth Bay .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named them in connection with the naming for the entire archipelago. Its namesake is Campbell Duncan Mackellar (1859-1925), a sponsor of the research trip , who was previously involved in financing the Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton .
