Concrete boat building competitions have been around for quite some time among students of civil engineering at universities and colleges held in Germany and many other countries. Typically the competition consists of a technical and a sporting evaluation. There have been well-engineered concrete ships in the past . Nevertheless, these competitions still enjoy the charm of the unconventional.

Different concepts are used for production. Concrete is mostly used in conjunction with fine-meshed wire or fiberglass nets as a composite construction material, but concrete boats have also been built without reinforcement .

As part of the 9th German Concrete Canoe Regatta, the students of the TU Dresden presented a functional boat with a pedal drive with the "Yellow October".

Furthermore, the first concrete hydrofoil was manufactured at the same university for the 11th concrete canoe regatta in Hanover in 2007 , but it cannot be lifted out of the water by muscle power alone.

The first vehicle of this type of material was manufactured by Lambot in Paris in 1854.
