Further training to become an IT specialist (HWK) can take place in an education and technology center (BTZ) of the Chamber of Crafts.

The degree in business information technology (HWK) requires three state-recognized exams:

  • Professional IT user
  • Network service technician
  • Application developer

In order to be admitted to these exams, a professional qualification in a recognized apprenticeship as well as the computer certificate A (qualified IT user) or many years of relevant professional experience in the IT sector (usually seven years) with an assessment test is required. Participation in the preparatory courses in the BTZen is not mandatory, so you can only take the exams of the three parts.

The exams can be taken in any order. Until the introduction of the new examination regulations, the title of state-certified business IT specialist (HWK) was awarded after successfully passing another state examination. After the introduction, the course content of the additional examination was integrated into the three above-mentioned examinations, the title is awarded on application and after submission of the examination certificates.

In some cases, examinations from other state examinations (e.g. IHK specialist network supervisor, IHK specialist, network administrator, IHK specialist application developer, IHK project manager) can be recognized. Specialist IT specialists (IHK) have special options for shortening the time .

Funding opportunities

The advanced training to become a business IT specialist (HWK) is qualified for master BAFÖG and can be funded with up to 55.5% of the course and examination fees.

An SBB gifted scholarship from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research can be granted under the usual conditions (e.g. applicants under 25, good performance in the journeyman's certificate or diploma).

The course can also be funded with the education bonus from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Armed Forces' professional development service or, on the basis of the AZWV, from the Federal Employment Agency.

Training opportunities

Since 2009, the degree has been recognized as a general university entrance qualification and enables access to all courses at colleges and universities. This can be followed by further training as a business IT specialist (HWK) . In the public service, this qualification can open the way to the higher technical service , as well as equivalent employment relationships (from EG9 TV-L , TVöD ).

The business informatics specialist (HWK) can also be credited as credit points at some universities of applied sciences and courses of study.

The business IT specialist (HWK) / business IT specialist (HWK) has been authorizing almost every form of a similar bachelor's / master's degree in ten of sixteen federal states in Germany since 2009.
