death

Bettie Jones lived in Chicago. She was the mother of five children. The two youngest were 19 years old at the time of the crime and were twins.

On the night of Saturday, December 27, 2015, the Chicago police were alerted via the 911 call. The father of a 19-year-old boy reported that his son was rioting in the house, fiddling with a baseball bat. According to his parents, the boy was receiving treatment for mental health problems.

The boy's father warned his apartment tenant, Bettie Jones, not to open the door until the police arrived. When the police arrived, Bettie Jones opened the door for the officers and was apparently shot immediately. The eldest daughter said her mother was shot through the door. The 19-year-old was also shot seven times.

Consequences

Police admitted Bettie Jones was accidentally shot dead. Chicago Police said: “The security forces were confronted with a combatant. A police officer then fatally wounded two people ”. The two police officers involved were suspended from duty for 30 days.

The Mayor of Chicago wanted to set up an independent commission to investigate the incident. The two victims were African American. With multiple cases of police violence against African Americans by the CPD, the US Department of Justice launched an investigation into police racism .

One of the officers described the process differently at his first interrogation than at his second. In some cases, the officers involved contradicted each other on details of the operation.
