Bettina Sellmann (* 1971 in Munich ) is a German artist and painter.

Life and career

From 1992 to 1997 Sellmann studied at the Städelschule, the state university for fine arts in Frankfurt am Main with Jörg Immendorff and Christa Näher , where she completed her studies as a master student of Thomas Bayrle . In 1995 she spent a semester at the École Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1999 she received a DAAD annual scholarship for New York City, where she lived until the end of 2009. She graduated from Hunter College New York City with a Master of Fine Arts. She has lived and worked in Berlin since 2010.

In her pictures Sellmann uses a watercolor-on-canvas technique in “candy-colored acrylic tones” and “many layers of translucent pigments in soft pink, powdery blue and screeching yellow and green”. Her works are described as "transparent versions of old masters ... who have become transparent and ethereal (see-through versions of old master paintings ... gone translucent and ethereal)", as "particular reverie-inducers", "which Explore the other side of pink. More recent pictures deal with kidult and fairytale “romanticism” (Cassandra Neyenesch) as well as kawaii image material in a painting that “is glamorous and magical and adds an uncanny facet” to an ostensibly carefree girlish palette. In such a "field of tension, the artist develops the elegant resolution of her own representationality."

In 2011 she carried out a space clearing in Wonderloch Kellerland Berlin - an empty space as a purely transcendent exhibition.

She is a member of the MalerinnenNetzWerk Berlin-Leipzig .

Her work is in private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art , New York, which houses her large-format drawing The Saints in This World Are Watching (2003).
