The Beuel washerwomen is a traditional event for women that takes place at Carnival in Bonn - Beuel . One of the highlights of the hustle and bustle is the annual Carnival procession followed by the town hall storm in Beuel.

background

On the sunny side of Bonn , in Beuel, the Beuel laundry business had been established for centuries . A large part of the laundry from the surrounding cities, including Cologne , was washed here.

Traditionally, the laundresses' men drove to Cologne on the Thursday before Carnival to deliver the freshly washed laundry, but also to celebrate Carnival extensively there.

In 1824, some laundresses decided to return the favor and break the rule of men in the carnival . When their men were on their way to Cologne by ship, they sat down for a coffee party. This was the hour of birth of the Old Beuel Women's Committee from 1824 e. V. In the following years more and more married women, so-called Möhne , joined the laundresses. In the years that followed, the day began with a pageant, and then the Wieversitzung was celebrated in a hall. Men were only allowed into the hall after the session was over.

The Bröckeweibchen is proof of the hustle and bustle of the Beuel ladies . The stone sculpture, which depicts a nagging washerwoman with swinging slippers, was attached to the river pillar of the old Rhine bridge in 1898 as a counterpart for the Bonner Bröckemännche .

The stone sculpture was recovered from the rubble of the destroyed Rhine bridge in 1945, erected on the banks of the Rhine for the 125th anniversary of Beuel's Weiberfastnacht in 1949 and ceremoniously unveiled on February 25, 1949 by Cologne's district president Wilhelm Warsch . The inscription on the memorial reads: “De Welt es e Lake, dat selvs de Beueler couldn't do laundry”.

In the course of renovation work in the area of the bridge, the sculpture was attached to the new flood protection wall in 2006 near the pier of the passenger ferry.

Regalia of the Beuel washer princess

Beuel washer princess

All Beuel women's committees have been participating in the Rathaussturm since 1957 and in the following year the washer princess is proclaimed for the first time by the currently 18 women's committees, together with Obermöhn . At first the washer-princesses were provided exclusively by the laundries; As this became more and more difficult, the women's committees took on this task year after year. The laundry princess's team consists of two laundresses, the adjutants (Bütz officers) provided by the Beuel City Soldiers Corps, the Obermöhn and the ladies' committee, from which the princess comes. The first washer princess in 1958 was Barbara Tiepholt. Since then, "Your loveliness, the washer-princess" has been helping the Obermöhn and the ladies' committee to storm the Beuel town hall.

The figure of the washer princess is only available in Beuel, it is unique in the German carnival. It was invented by the then Beuel city director, the Westphalia Franz Brock .

In addition to the women's committees, the Beuel city soldiers , the washer princess's protection force, are an important part of the Beuel women's carnival. Two of their city soldiers, the so-called Bütz officers, have been part of the official delegation to the Beueler Weiberfastnacht for years.

The following list contains an overview of the Beuel washer princesses. Since the princesses were provided by the local laundries up to and including 1964, the name of the laundry is listed in the Ladies Committee column during these years. In the two years in which the washer princess from the French twin town Mirecourt was elected, the town name is listed in the column Ladies Committee. Because of the flood disaster in 1962 , the carnival events were canceled, the term of office of the incumbent washer princess extended to the following session. In 1991 the carnival parades were canceled because of the second Gulf War , so the reigning princess remained in office and dignity in 1992.
