The founding of the district museum in Buchen and its sponsoring association goes back to the teacher Karl Trunzer (1856–1927), who collected large amounts of folk art from the Odenwald in the run-up to the folk art exhibition on the occasion of the silver wedding anniversary of the Baden grand duke couple in Karlsruhe in 1910 . The exhibition then moved from Karlsruhe to Buchen, where the exhibits could be seen again in the town hall from December 22, 1910 to February 2, 1911. With Karl Hofacker , the director of the Karlsruhe School of Applied Arts, Trunzer was able to win an advocate for the establishment of a museum in Buchen. For this purpose, the Bezirksmuseum Buchen association was founded on February 13, 1911 in the Hotel Prinz Carl in Buchen , which was entered in the register of associations on June 29, 1913 with over 200 members.

As early as June 20, 1915, the association's goal of setting up a museum for the Buchen administrative district was achieved with the opening of the museum in an outbuilding of the former Kurmainzische winery . Teacher Trunzer was completely absorbed in museum work and was given leave of absence from 1919 by the Ministry of Culture to organize the museum. Trunzer's house, the Alte Spital, is now part of the museum as the Trunzerhaus . In the decades that followed, the museum's exhibition space was expanded considerably. A media room, a magazine, a workshop and an office of the association were also set up.
