Sokolov Castle

The Sokolov District Museum is housed in the Sokolov Castle. The castle stands in the center of the town of Sokolov in western Czech Republic .

The district museum contains exhibits on the history of the region and the city, starting with natural and geological finds and explanations. The region has always been characterized by mining, in addition to the centuries-old extraction of coal, the mining of tin also played an important role in past centuries . The production of porcelain is also an important part of the industrial history. It shows the history of the labor movement and the time of the world wars. The Falkenau satellite camp and the documentary recordings made by Samuel Fuller are discussed, and a plaque at the entrance to the museum commemorates his participation in the liberation of the concentration camp by American soldiers. Other, later recordings document the destruction of villages and towns in the immediate vicinity after the expulsion of the German-speaking population. More recent research relates to the aristocratic families that ruled on site, these are essentially the Notthracht , Schlik and Nostitz . The historical research on the families regarded as pure feudal lords had hardly been carried out in the time of communism.
