history

The old name of Bhamo is Sampanago. Here was the capital of the lost Shan Kingdom of Manmaw. The ruins of the old fortress can still be seen about 5 km outside of today's city.

In the 19th century , Bhamo was an important trading city. Particularly between October and May, the Chinese and Burmese met here every year to trade silk , manufacture and other goods. Only the rainy season interrupted the hustle and bustle. At the time, Burma mainly exported cotton , serpentine stone , ivory , rhinoceros horn and amber , and imported mercury , zinc , cinnabar , velvet and opium . English steamers with shallow tugs conveyed traffic with Rangoon .

Great Britain tried in vain to establish trade with south-western China from here. The attempt failed because of the nature of the country, because between Bhamo and Yunnan there are high snow-covered mountain ranges.

religion

Banmaw is the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop .
