history

Blood rider, pastor and acolyte

According to a riding order of August 16, 1734, the city's Catholic council approved and confirmed a group of riders who from then on called themselves blood riders .

On August 22, 1734, Johann Baptist Ludwig Lutz, who was then a court assessor for the city, went on a publicity ride in the surrounding towns. He won eighteen blood riders in the villages of Baustetten , Burgrieden and Bühl. He went on seventy more "recruiting trips". After initial successes, there were also setbacks. Of the one hundred and seventy-four riders who had been won, soon sixty-seven were eliminated.

On May 19, 1735 at four in the morning, the group's first blood kick took place in Weingarten. A total of two cavalry companies, each sixty-strong, set out from Biberach. All riders wore the same uniform. On May 16, 1735, the Guardian of the Capuchins , Father Seraphin, had blessed the standards and the cross that the riders still carry with them when they are kicked. The five times reinforced cross is also the cross of the papal order of knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . This cross was carried by Godfrey of Bouillon as a military leader on the First Crusade to Jerusalem, which is why it is also called the Jerusalem Cross . The Maltese cross can be seen on the rider's saddlecloth.

With the force since 1994 except in relation to girls up to the age of 14, provided they acolytes are at Weingartner Blutritt no women are allowed to ride with. In 2009 the Ravensburger Blutreiter made up the largest group of 106 riders and were able to lead the procession for the first time since 1911.
