features

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 35 millimeters. The front wings are colored red-brown to gray-brown. Ring, tenon and kidney defects usually have the tint of the basic color and are fine, but very clearly bordered. The serrated transverse lines, the wavy line and the veins in the hem area also come into their own. The midfield is darkened at times. The caterpillar is reddish in color, on the back it is a little darker. It is covered with very small point warts. Each segment has a light transverse line. The white stigmas are bordered with black. The small head is light yellow-brown.

The squat doll has two diverging thorns on the cremaster .

Similar species

Due to the very distinctive drawing, the species is unmistakable.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is native to large parts of southern and central Europe. The eastern distribution area extends to the Urals and the Altai . In the south of the distribution area there are several records from eastern Turkey. In the southern valleys of the Alps , it rises to around 1500 meters. In eastern Turkey it rises to an altitude of 2050 meters. Evidence from western Siberia has proven to be dubious. The Bibernell mountain meadow owl can be found mainly in warm, dry and sandy places.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal and suckle on the flowers of the barberry ( Berberis vulgaris ) or the common adder's head ( Echium vulgare ). They also appear in artificial light sources . The moths fly in two generations from mid-April to early July and from mid-August to late September. The caterpillars feed primarily on types of barberry ( Berberis ), whereby they prefer the flowers. They can be found from September and overwinter.

Danger

In Germany, the Bibernell mountain meadow owl was considered extinct or lost for many years. In 2008, however, it was detected again. In the German-speaking area it can also be found in some warm and dry places in eastern Austria .
