Karl Schawerda

Karl Schawerda (born February 4, 1869 in Újezd , † September 11, 1945 in Vienna ) was an Austrian doctor and lepidopterologist .

Life

Schawerda spent most of his childhood and youth in Schottenfeld and graduated from the local high school in 1888. In 1894 he received his doctorate as a doctor universae medicinae . He then worked in the general hospital on the wards for internal medicine , surgery , gynecology and laryngology as well as in the St. Anna Children's Hospital . As a general practitioner, he specialized in gynecology and obstetrics. During the First World War Schawerda received the "Cross of Merit with the crown on the ribbon of the medal of bravery " and the " Medal of Honor from the Red Cross with the war decoration". He was later appointed to the Medical Council and soon after to the Senior Medical Council. Parallel to his medical activities, he was intensively involved in lepidopterology and undertook various entomological collecting trips. He published many works in specialist journals, including faunistic works and a description of the forms of the plantain bear ( Parasemia plantaginis ), a species with which he was particularly interested.

Schawerda wrote a total of 125 papers on entomological topics. These include twelve supplements on the lepidopteran fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina and seven articles on its lepidopteran yield from the high mountains of Corsica .
