Hans Reisser (March 20, 1896 - April 23, 1976 ) was an Austrian printer and lepidopterist .

Life

Reisser spent his childhood and youth in Vienna and learned French at an early age in addition to his mother tongue. After graduating from the humanistic Franz-Josef-Gymnasium , he began studying at the Export Academy, today's Vienna University of Economics , but had to interrupt it after the First World War broke out. In 1918 he returned to Vienna as a lieutenant in the reserve with awards. There he trained as a book printer , joined the family business Christoph Reisser's Sons and became print shop manager, but had to interrupt this activity due to the Second World War . After the war and as a prisoner of war, he converted the company into a stock corporation in 1962 . In parallel to his business activities, Reisser has been occupied with entomology , especially butterflies, from a young age . His scientific mentor in this area was Karl Schawerda . He was promoted by the entomologists Hans Rebel and Hans Zerny . His specialties included the moths, which were still called small butterflies ( Microlepidoptera ) during his active time, as well as the spanners (Geometridae). In addition to local faunistic studies, Reisser undertook a total of 29 collecting and research trips, most of which took him to the Mediterranean region, twelve of them to Crete . Together with Hans Georg Amsel and František Gregor he started as co-editor of the multi-volume encyclopedia Microlepidoptera Palaearctica .

In 1944 Reisser became an honorary member of the Vienna Entomological Society and from 1946 its chairman. In recognition of his many years of work in the Entomological Department, the Museum Alexander König awarded him the title of “Scientific Assistant at the Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig”.

The State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe bought in 1976 the famous Butterfly Collection "Reisser" with over 100,000 copies. It contains, among other things, a special collection Geometridae with a focus on Sterrhinae .
