The Biblioteca Chigiana has been an important part of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana since 1923 . The core is the book collection of the learned humanist Fabio Chigi, who as Alexander VII held the chair of Peter from 1655 to 1667. Alexander's nephew Agostino Chigi created the appropriate framework for the library towards the end of the 17th century with the libraria in Palazzo Chigi in Rome, which he had acquired from Olimpia Aldobrandini in 1659 . It was later expanded by three cardinals from the Chigi family: Flavio Chigi (1631–1693) , Flavio Chigi (1711–1771) and Flavio Chigi (1810–1885).

In 1764 Stefano Evodio Assemani published a printed catalog of the library.

In May 1918 the Italian government bought the library for 1,180,000 lire and shortly thereafter made it accessible to the learned public in Palazzo Chigi . On December 28, 1922, the holdings of the Vatican Library were donated. The government was able to shorten the library's summer holidays and extend the opening times. In addition, until 1846 the holdings of the Vatican Archives were accessible to researchers without special authorization. The Holy See promised a generous grant of special permits for younger funds.
