history

Swiss period

When the Swiss Esperanto Society was founded in 1903, magazines and books accumulated in the office in Bern : Since the society had its own magazine, it exchanged it with others and received books for review. In 1908 Eduard Stettler suggested turning it into a Swiss Esperanto library . In 1912 Hector Hodler , the then director of the Esperanto World Federation in Geneva , acquired this library.

After Hodler's death in 1920, the collection became the Biblioteko de UEA . Even after the major disputes in 1936 - when the regional associations split off from the UEA and most of the members also left - the library in Geneva remained with the UEA. In the basement of the Palais Wilson she survived the Second World War .

When the Esperanto movement was reunited under its old name in 1947, the library was given the name Biblioteko Hector Hodler . Since there was a dispute with the supervisor Hans Jakob, the collection was only gradually transferred to the central office from 1960, which was now in Rotterdam. Over time, the number of books and magazines increased and more rooms were allocated to the library, and in 2006 the library moved to another wing of the building, the previous Zamenhof Salon.

Collection content

The library collects books and magazines that have to do with the planned language Esperanto or have been published in this language. Sometimes it also deals with other planned languages and related topics such as language policy and international cooperation. There is also a photo archive, posters and audiovisual media.
