Life

Hector suffered from his parents' quarrels and distracted himself by acquiring knowledge. As a 12-year-old, he is said to have read the whole of Zola . He had to be a model for his father.

At the age of 14 he learned Esperanto , together with his school friend Edmond Privat , who later became a journalist and historian. In 1903 they founded the Esperanto youth magazine Juna Esperantisto .

From 1907, after Hodler bought the Esperanto magazine , he was committed to founding an international Esperanto organization. This is how the World Esperanto Federation came into being in 1908 . Hodler became the first director, board member and continued to edit his magazine.

During the First World War his interest in international politics increased.

Hector Hodler died of tuberculosis on March 31, 1920 in a sanatorium in Leysin , only two years after the death of his father. Hodler left a large part of his considerable fortune, the Esperanto magazine and his Esperanto library to the World Esperanto Federation . Today it bears his name ( Hector Hodler Library , Rotterdam ) and is one of the largest Esperanto libraries in the world.
