The Biblical House (Neißstraße 29) is a town house in the old town of Görlitz . The house got its nickname because of its reliefs on the facade on the first and second floors. They show scenes from the Old and New Testament. It is located on Neißstraße, the connection between Untermarkt and the old town bridge over the Lausitz Neisse and, along with the Schönhof, is one of the most famous Renaissance buildings in the city. In its neighboring house to the west - the baroque corner house at Neißstraße 30  - is the Görlitz Cultural History Museum .

history

The renaissance building in 1952

In 1570 - during the high renaissance phase  - the Weimar woad dealer Hans Heinze acquired the town house at Neißstraße 29 and had it rebuilt. The previous building, like all other buildings on Neißstraße and on the southern Untermarkt, was destroyed in a city fire in 1525. The town house once also had a stone Renaissance gable, which, however, fell victim to a town fire in 1726.

The facade decoration of the house was made by the sculptor Hans Kramer the Elder. J. designed. In the cornice above the ground floor you can read the following: "GOD IS MY HELPER REDEEMED AND THRESTER TO THE LEADING ME ALONE 1570" (God is my helper, savior and comforter, on whom I rely alone). Above the door arch is written: “GOT PEWARE YOUR ENTRANCE AND EXIT TO ETERNAL TIMES” (God forbid your entry and exit in eternal times).

Inside, a high, but narrow atrium opens up, as is typical for Görlitz hall houses . On the first floor there is a renaissance hall with a wooden beam ceiling. The ceiling beams are close to each other and are decorated with acanthus tendrils and irregularly interspersed depictions of animals.

Between 2000 and 2004 the house was completely renovated by the Wüstenrot Foundation and the city of Görlitz.

Reliefs

The reliefs between the ground floor and first floor as well as the first and second floor show representations from the Old and New Testament . Below that are in the upper relief volume: Mary's Annunciation, Jesus' birth, Jesus' baptism, Holy Communion and Jesus' crucifixion. The lower relief band shows the creation of Eve, the fall of man, Isaac's sacrifice, Moses 'legislation and Moses' exaltation of the serpent. Below the eaves there are also five narrow reliefs, but their interpretation is not certain.

portal

The portal

Compared to other Görlitz arches, the portal of the Biblical House is a special feature. Numerous portals in Görlitz town houses are decorated with square-framed flowers. The seat niche portal has a continuous acanthus motif and a gaff head at the location of the keystone. A gaff head in a similar shape was added to the portal of the town hall (Untermarkt 8) 14 years earlier. The portal is flanked on both sides by protruding columns with composite capitals . The pedestals on which the columns rest are covered with flat arabesque reliefs.
