Seat of the Silesian Museum

The Schönhof is the oldest Renaissance building in Görlitz . The building at Brüderstraße 8 was built in 1526, immediately after the city fire of 1525, over the remains of the previous building by council builder Wendel Roskopf the Elder .

Favored by the topographical location, the representative building comfortably furnished in the 15th and 16th centuries served as a princely guest house. Here, among other things stayed Wenceslas IV. , King of Bohemia and Elector Johann Georg of Saxony . Today you can still z. B. see structural remains of a former medieval toilet facility with flushing water on the 1st floor.

The ribbon windows in sandstone , which are particularly elaborate here, are typical of the early Renaissance building . The Renaissance style can still be found inside. Colorful birds and fruits, numerous flower motifs and ornaments can be seen on the wooden beam ceilings and walls .

Many paintings that came to light during the restoration can no longer be reconstructed in detail. So some things will remain unfinished. Soiling is removed under the supervision of monument preservation , but scars and damage to the building should be visible.

Artful painting that has come to the fore in a well-preserved state has been carefully repainted. Under an almost black plaster from the 16th century there were colored flowers that entwined around the beams. The light and shadow details are drawn in between paintings in the so-called diamond shape.

The tiled floor dates from the late Middle Ages .

exhibition

In 2006, after extensive restoration , the building became the seat of the Silesian Museum in Görlitz. All important topics of Silesian cultural history are to be presented here. The design system for the exhibition had to do justice to the special character of the building and not cover up the valuable paintings. Apart from a fire extinguisher, nothing should be hanging on the walls. The exhibits are shown in showcases, from which the lighting must also come from.

There will be over 2000 square meters of exhibition space - with underfloor heating - here.

The Silesian Museum is currently focusing on art . It was opened in 2001 on 350 m² of exhibition space in the “Haus zum Goldenen Baum”, located next to the Schönhof, and the exhibition “In Search of Silesia” was shown. Over 12,000 exhibits have been brought together in Görlitz from private donations to Silesian cultural assets and, above all, from permanent loans from the federal government. The special thing about the “German Central Museum for Silesia” is the structure: This facility is jointly supported by the federal government , the Free State of Saxony , the city and the Silesian Landsmannschaft .

The presentation of history that awaits visitors to the Silesian Museum can be seen again in the large concept since 2006, as the Silesian Museum is presented in the entire complex. The exhibition begins in the late 12th century when settlers from Thuringia and Franconia came to Silesia . Part of the exhibition is devoted to landscapes such as the Giant Mountains and cities such as the metropolis of Wroclaw , while another part deals with people, language and culture .
