On January 21, 2005, Müller left the Saxon state parliament together with the entire NPD parliamentary group in order not to have to take part in a minute of silence for the victims of the National Socialist terror.

Müller ran for the office of Prime Minister of Saxony in May 2008 after Georg Milbradt resigned . He received eleven votes, three more than the NPD parliamentary group had seats, possibly from the three former NPD MPs who were non-party at the time of the vote. Müller was a member of the Federal Assembly in 2009 , 2010 and 2012 .

After Holger Apfel resigned as chairman of the parliamentary group, Müller took over the chairmanship of the NPD parliamentary group. When the NPD left the state parliament in the state elections in Saxony in 2014 , he lost his mandate .
