The Big Brook is an approximately 110 km long tributary of the Labrador Sea to the east of Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The river used to be named Black Brook , St. Michaels River , Michaels River, and Big River .

River course

Big Brook originates from a small nameless lake east of Gerald Pond at an altitude of 310  m . The Big Brook flows in a predominantly east-northeast direction. The Big Brook flows through Lake Michael between river kilometers 59 and 47 . He leaves the lake at its eastern end. It flows almost 8 km to the southeast before turning east-northeast for the last 40 km. The Benedict Mountains stretch north of the lower reaches . The Big Brook finally flows into the Labrador Sea west of Red Rock Point . The river's estuary is separated from the sea by a 2 km long sandbank. The Big Brook catchment area is an estimated 700 km².

Animal fauna

In the course of the Big Brook the Atlantic salmon , the arctic char and the brook char (anadromous and non-anadromous form) occur. Seals hibernate on the lower ten kilometers of the river . They also use the water to raise their young.
