Big Mama is an American documentary released in 2000.

action

Viola Dees is an elderly and ailing woman who takes care of her grandson Walter. The orphaned boy is a problem child, rebellious and destructive. No one else in the family is able to look after and raise Walter. The situation, underestimated by the authorities, is getting worse. At 90 years of age, Viola is found to be too old. She has a heart attack when Walter plays with fire and the house burns down. The authorities separate the two and ensure that the boy is placed in a special facility.

In 2001 the film received an Oscar in the Best Documentary Short Film category.

He also won the Crystal Heart at the Heartland Film Festival and the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival .

Viola Dees was 90 years old when the film was made. She died at the age of 91. The footage was made available to the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services , which viewed the 11-hour document.
