Bigha

Bigha ( Nepali : बिघा , bighā ) was a unit of measurement of area that was mainly used in Nepal and parts of India until the changeover to the metric system (1962). The size of a bighas fluctuated greatly and is given as between 1500 and 6771 square meters .

Use in Nepal

In Nepal, one bigha is around 2603.7 m². Most of the country is officially measured in Bigha (in the lowlands) or in Ropani (in the mountains). The metric system is hardly used in the state.

One bigha equals 20 kattha . One kattha is equivalent to 20 dhur.

Furthermore:

  • a bigha = 13 ropani
  • one ropani = 16 ana
  • an Ana = 4 Paisa
  • a paisa = 4 dam

Use in India

In Rajasthan , one bigha was the equivalent of 2500 m². In Bengal , a bigha was equivalent to 1333.33 m².
