Bigliel (different or older spellings: de Balliel , Balielen , Balil ) is a Grisons notable family whose members held several public offices in the 17th century. She is related by marriage to the Berther , Latour and Schmid von Grüneck families.

The best-known representative of the family was Jakob de Balliel (Romanesque spelling: Gianchen de Balliel ), who worked in Teglio as a pedestal for the Three Leagues and between 1614 and 1642, as governor and finally as district judge, directed the fate of the Gray League .

coat of arms

The Bündner Wappenbuch describes the family's coat of arms as follows: A flying silver sherbet on a blue background, carrying a red berry with a green branch in its beak. Including a green three-mountain . The full coat of arms contains a helmet with a puff and a padded helmet cover attached to the shield. The crest consists of the shield image without a three-mountain.

The family's coat of arms can be found in the judges' hall of Cuort Ligia Grischa .

Origin and meaning

The family name is mentioned for the first time in 1497 and is of unknown origin. It is believed that it is a Celtic or late Latin form of the name. Due to the Walser settlement of the area in the 12th century, an Alemannic origin of the name cannot be completely ruled out. Today there are still several field names with the same name in the Romansh-speaking villages of Tujetsch , Sumvitg and Sevgein . If known, these are related to the family.
