Bihār al-Anwār

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bihār al-Anwār ( Arabic بحار الأنوار, DMG Biḥār al-Anwār  'Oceans of Light') is a Shiite hadith collection by Muhammad Bāqir al-Majlisī , also known as Allamah al-Majlisi. It is one of the most extensive collections of hadiths.

The collection was probably completed in 1698 and comprises 110 volumes. Majlisi tried to collect all the traditions that he could find without applying any censorship. This should give later generations the opportunity to determine authenticity in independent research.

The author collected the traditions of Mohammed , his daughter Fatima and the Twelve Imams of the Shiites , using both Shiite and Sunni sources. The collection also contains narratives of historical events and commentaries on verses of the Koran ( Koran exegesis ).
