The Bijlands Canal near Millingen

The Bijlands Canal is a three-kilometer-long waterway between the Dutch towns of Tolkamer and Millingen .

Most of the canal forms the German-Dutch border and belongs to the Rhine. It is the route between the Dutch Upper Rhine ( Dutch Bovenrijn ) and the Pannerdens Canal .

The canal was laid across the Bijlandsche Waard between 1773 and 1776 and cut off a loop of what was then the Waal . The Gelderlanders not only wanted to use this canal for shipping, but also to protect the Waal area against flooding. For the same reason, the Pannerdens Canal was also built to drain excess water from the Waal to Nederrijn and IJssel .

The old area between the canal and the cut off Waalarm, De Bijland, is now used as a recreational and water sports area and is part of De Gelderse Poort .

A pedestrian ferry runs between Millingen and the Bijland.
