The picture chapel in St. Gallen is a chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara in the St. Gallen district of Winkeln . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the AFG Arena .

history

The chapel had its origins in a wayside shrine that was erected in 1209 to commemorate the battle between Abbot Ulrich VI on the Breitfeld . was built by Sax and the bishop Werner von Konstanz . Some of the fallen are said to have been buried in the field at that time. This wayside shrine gave the nearby homestead the name "Bild".

Abbot Gallus Alt (Gallus II.) Replaced this wayside shrine with today's chapel. The foundation stone was laid in 1666; on March 31, 1668 the small hand-rung bell in the roof turret was consecrated. The consecration took place on April 9, 1671. It was probably only then that she received the patronage of St. Barbara. The chapel was renovated in 1889, 1964 and 1989.

Church services are celebrated regularly in the chapel, which administratively belongs to the Catholic parish of Winkeln. However, the parish church of Winkeln is the much newer church of Winkeln .

architecture

The chapel is built in the Baroque style, which is particularly indicated by the elaborately decorated high altar. Poeschel suspects that only the statue of St. Barbara on it dates from the 17th century. Except for an old cross, the nave is undecorated. The arcade in front of the entrance is striking. In the turret there is a single small bell that is rung by hand.
