Biljana Borzan (born November 29, 1971 in Osijek ) is a Croatian politician of the Socijaldemokratska partija Hrvatske (SDP).

Life

Borzan studied medicine at the University of Zagreb and received her doctorate in 1997. She specialized in occupational and sports medicine and worked from 1997 to 2007 as a doctor at the House of Health in Osijek.

She has been a member of the SDP since 1999. From 2004 to 2008 she was deputy chairwoman of the SDP, and since then she has been a member of the party executive committee. From 2001 to 2004, 2005 to 2008 and 2009 to 2013 she was a member of the Osijek City Council, and in 2008/09 she was the city's deputy mayor. She ran three times for the office of mayor of Osijek for the SDP, but was defeated by Anto Đapić (2005 and 2007) and Gordan Matković (2008), both from Hrvatska stranka prava .

2011 to 2013 she was a member of the Croatian Parliament ; there she was chair of the Committee on Health and Social Policy.

She was elected in the 2013 European elections so that she became a member of the European Parliament on July 1, 2013 (the day Croatia joined the EU) . She is a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China for the electoral term that runs until 2014 .
