William "Bill" Allen (born October 22, 1917 in Newburn , † May 21, 1981 in Westerhope ) was an English football player .

Career

Allen came in November 1937 from the North-Eastern League of Throckley Welfare to the second division Chesterfield FC , but remained largely limited to the reserve team, the inner trio in the first team at that time were Peter Ramage , Dudley Milligan and Tom Lyon . After his Football League debut on August 27, 1938 in a 1: 3 away defeat against Millwall FC , only one more use followed during the rest of the season.

For the 1939/40 season Allen moved to the Third Division North to York City and scored both goals at the start of the season in a 2-2 draw against Chester FC . Due to the outbreak of World War II, the season was canceled after the third match day and Allen, who served in the army during the war, only played in the seasons 1939/40 (6 missions / 4 goals) and 1945/46 (20/12) Games for York in the war-related substitute competitions. When regular play was resumed for the 1946/47 season, Allen was again at the start of the season against Chester (played according to the schedules of the 1939/40 season) in the team and scored a goal at 4: 4. While he was called up as a center forward or half- forward in the first post-war season and had scored 13 goals this season, he moved to the position of the left outer runner in the course of the 1947/48 season and was part of the permanent staff for three seasons.

For the season 1950/51 strengthened the newly included in the Football League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United with the experienced player. Allen formed the runner row in the first Football League game in the club's history with Dick Taylor and Joe McCormick ; as the season went on, McCormick lost his seat to Jack Hubbard and Allen moved from right to left. From the fall of 1951, all of the appearances became more sporadic, even in the third round match in the FA Cup 1951/52 against reigning champions Tottenham Hotspur (final score 0: 3), he was not included in the squad. At the end of the season, Allen left the club and ended his career in non-league football at Goole Town .
